Safety

Think and act in a safe manner. Always disconnect power and use a lockout before you work on the E-coat system, or any of the related subsystems. Observe any confined space conditions. Use the appropriate safety equipment and clothing for the task. Please carefully read all the instructions listed below to familiarize yourself with the project before attempting to perform any of the work.

Required Materials

  • UFSc P/N 175xxx - Guard, Membrane Shell, PP, X mm Long (Length = Effective Length of Membrane Shell)

Required Tools

  • Matte Knife
  • Soft Padding (i.e. carpet scrap)

General

It is possible to upgrade a non-guarded TECTRON Cell to become a guarded version. The instructions below explain how it’s done. It’s also an alternative solution when your TECTRON Cell’s guard is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Step 1

Turn off the power to the e-coat DC rectifier. Follow your company’s Lock Out/Tag Out procedures for electrical equipment maintenance. Remove the ME Cell electrical and plumbing connections.

Step 2

With the ME Cell still in the e-coat tank, remove the Electrode from the ME Cell. Set the Electrode aside. Remove the ME Shell from the tank and rinse off excess paint with D.I. Water. (IMPORTANT: WORK QUICKLY AND DO NOT LET THE MEMBRANE SHELL DRY OUT.) Lay the ME Shell on a clean table, taking care not to cut, slice or bruise the membrane.

Step 3

Remove accumulated paint solids from the collar. Since the paint solids on the collar are not cured, a matte knife can be used to score and peel them off. It is important to make sure the collar is as clean as possible. (see step 5)

Step 4

Starting at the cap (bottom), push the Guard onto to the ME Shell. The Guard will easily slide over the cap. Take care not to tear or cut the ME Shell’s protective wrap as you slide the Guard over it.

Step 5

Push the Guard over at least 50 mm (2 inches) of the collar (top). This may be difficult because the outside diameter of the collar is exactly the same as the inside diameter of the Guard. It is important, however, to get a good interference fit for the Guard. The following tips may help you in this process:

Stand the ME Shell on neck end, vertically, on soft padding.

Step 7

Grasp the Guard and compress it slightly. Fit it over a part of the leading edge of the cap. Continue compressing sections of the guard, until it is completely on the collar.

Step 8

Push the guard toward the floor. Push with firm, even pressure, taking care not to stress the neck of the ME Shell.

Step 9

Reinstall the ME Shell and the Electrode in the paint tank. Reinstall the electrical and plumbing connections. Remove Lock Out/Tag Out equipment. Turn on system power.
